In 1935, 99-year-old former slave Shadrach asks to be buried on the soil where he was born to slavery,
and that land is owned by the large Dabney family, consisting of Vernon, Trixie and their seven children,
and to bury a black man on that land is a violation of strict Virginia law.

This movie includes two skinny dipping scenes. In the first the two main boys (10) are seen nude briefly from a distance from the rear.
In the second, one of the boys is seen nude from the rear again but this time much closer and for a longer period of time.
During the second skinning dipping scene there is a flash back to when Shadrach was about ten years old and skinning dipping in the same pond.
The young Shadrach is seen from the front.
Monica (11) has wet dress in one scene.
