Caterina in the Big City

In "Caterina in the Big City," the wonderful Italian actor
Sergio Castellitto dives headlong into the role of Giancarlo
Iacovoni, a teacher, aspiring novelist and hothead quaking
with frustration and self-righteous fury about any number
of issues. As the story begins, Giancarlo has finally secured
a long-coveted job in Rome, where he grew up, and he can't
wait to leave a rural town in what one character calls
"hillbilly" country. The movie views the upheaval of Giancarlo
and his timid, long-suffering wife, Agata (Margherita Buy),
through the eyes of their sweet 12-year-old and only child,
Caterina (Alice Teghil). Almost immediately upon arriving
at her new fast-track school, she finds herself the object of
a furious tug of war between two cliques. As the other girls
hurl epithets like "Communist" and "fascist" at one another,
an American viewer can be forgiven for feeling a twinge of
longing for an adolescent body politic this politically conscious
in the United States. The movie, directed by Paolo Virzi from
a screenplay he wrote with Francesco Bruni, uses the competition
for Caterina's loyalty to portray the school as a microcosm of
Italian society under Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Any way you look at it, it's not a pretty picture.
